Seasoning steel

My fryer has carbon steel heating elements which are above the cold zone. I may have been overzealous while cleaning the fryer. The elements now produce a black residue when heated, not good for my fat.

People have advised me to just keep cooking but it's not working. The fryer can only go to 190c so it will not go beyond the smoke point of most oils. Oxygen may also be necessary to the seasoning process. Would you advise me to remove the elements and season them in the oven. Or is there no hope, should I just purchase new elements. Any advice anyoney may have would be greatly appreciated.
